In questo post Sam Harris comincia col mettere in chiaro una cosa ovvia ma regolarmente ignorata: o il cristianesimo è vero oppure è falso. O i cristiani hanno ragione, oppure hanno torto. Inoltre, le principali credenze religiose sono mutuamente incompatibili tra loro: se una è vera le altre sono false.
Capitolo 1
Tu credi che la Bibbia sia la parola di Dio, che Gesù sia il figlio di Dio, e che solo quelli che hanno fede in Gesù troveranno la salvezza dopo la morte. Come cristiano, credi tutte queste proposizioni non perché ti fanno sentire bene, ma perché pensi che siano vere . Prima di evidenziare alcuni dei problemi di queste credenze, vorrei precisare che io e te siamo d'accordo su molte cose. Siamo d'accordo, per esempio, che se uno di noi ha ragione, l'altro ha torto. O la Bibbia è la parola di Dio, o non lo è. O Gesù fornisce all'umanità l'unico vero percorso verso la salvezza (Giovanni 14:6) oppure non lo fa. Siamo d'accordo che essere un vero cristiano significa credere che tutte le altre fedi siano nel torto, ed in modo profondo. Se il cristianesimo è corretto, ed io persisto nella mia miscredenza, dovrei aspettarmi di soffrire le pene dell'inferno. Ancora peggio, io ho persuaso altre persone, e molte di esse a me vicine, a rifiutare l'idea stessa di Dio. Anche loro bruceranno nel fuoco eterno (Matteo 25:41). Se la dottrina fondamentale della cristianità è corretta, allora io ho fatto cattivo uso della mia vita nel peggior modo concepibile. Ammetto tutto questo senza alcuna riserva. Il fatto che il mio continuato e pubblico rifiuto del cristianesimo non mi preoccupi minimamente dovrebbe suggerirti quanto inadeguate mi sembrano le tue ragioni per essere cristiano.
Naturalmente, ci sono cristiani che non sono d'accordo né con me né con te. Secondo alcuni cristiani le altre fedi sono percorsi ugualmente validi verso la salvezza. Ci sono cristiani che non hanno paura dell'inferno e che non credono nella resurrezione fisica di Gesù. Questi cristiani spesso chiamano se stessi "religiosi liberali" o "religiosi moderati". Dal loro punto di vista, io e te abbiamo entrambi frainteso cosa significa essere una persona di fede. I have written elsewhere of the problems I see in religious liberalism and religious moderation. Here we need only observe that the issue is simpler and more urgent than liberals and moderates are used to admit. Or the Bible is just an ordinary book, written by mortals, or it is not. Either Christ was divine, or was not. If the Bible is just an ordinary book, and Christ was an ordinary man, the fundamental doctrine of Christianity è falsa. There is a vast literature that describes the life of Muhammad that, from the viewpoint of Islam, shows that he was the latest prophet of God Muhammad also assured his followers that Jesus was not divine (Qur'an 5:71 -75; 19: 30 -38) and that anyone who believes otherwise will spend eternity in hell. Muslims are sure that the view of Muhammad on this subject, and all others, is infallible.
Why do not lose sleep wondering if you should convert to Islam? can prove that Allah is the one true God? You can not prove that the archangel Gabriel visited Muhammad in his cave? Of course not. But you do not need to prove any of these things for the beliefs of Muslims reject as nonsense. They have to prove that their beliefs about God and Muhammad is valid . They have not done so. They can not do. Muslims just do not make claims about reality that can be substantiated. This is perfectly obvious to anyone who has not made numb from the dogmas of Islam.
The truth is that you know perfectly well what it means to be an atheist with respect to the beliefs of Muslims. Is not it obvious that Muslims are fooling themselves? not it obvious that anyone who thinks that the Quran is the perfect world of the creator of the universe has not read the book with a critical eye? It is obvious that the doctrine of Islam is an almost perfect barrier to honest inquiry? Yes, these things are obvious. Well, try to understand that the way you view Islam is precisely the way devout Muslims see Christianity. And that is how I see all religions.
