Combining Mayan culture with the biblical one, Aronofsky creates a new world that is familiar because it responds to cognitive demands and classificatory present in all societies. I really liked this movie, even if at times threatens to become a bit 'too new age.
The director has chosen to talk about love and death using the archetype of the tree of life and the result is excellent.
This is the third film by Aronofsky and even his earlier works, like this one, dealt with religious themes of philosophy, and uses a rather innovative use of the footage.
