I talked about the problems of supporting truth of religion and the problems of sustaining the ' utility of religion. The last way to defend religion is essentially attack atheism as another religion is intolerant, and dogmatic, is arrogant.
Ok, let's be clear: Jews, Christians and Muslims claim that their holy books are so profound that they must have been written under the direction of an omniscient deity. An atheist is simply someone who has considered this claim, read the books in question, and concluded that the claim is ridiculous. [audience laughs].
[The atheist is not dogmatic, because being dogmatic means taking something without sufficient evidence]. And there is nothing that should be taken without sufficient evidence, to dismiss the idea of \u200b\u200bthe biblical God. Perhaps we embrace a dogma when liquid Zeus, Poseidon and Apollo as nonsense? We are perhaps dogmatic when we ignore all the thousands of dead, which now lie buried in the farce we call mythology? E 'perhaps dogmatic doubt that the Iliad and the Odyssey were written by the creator of the universe? This is not dogmatism. As Carl Sagan said, "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." And that's all it takes to be an atheist. That's it.
There is another trend related to say that atheism is arrogant, or science in general is arrogant, settled in religion. This argument echoes endlessly in the ecosystem of religious discourse in America. This is really ironic. E 'deeply ironic view of religious people, who constantly extol their humility [audience laughs], and at the same time with incredible complacency make claims about cosmology, physics, astronomy, geology, biology and paleontology, that no scientist would ever do. [How HUMBLE this attitude? How humble claim to know with certainty things contrary to the evidence? litanies].
53% of Americans apparently takes literally the account of creation found in Genesis. But even if you give him a minimal dignity, as if in some way information ... [Audience laughs] ... To recap, let me just say that nothing of what I have said should be considered a denial of the importance of ethics in our lives, and even the importance of spiritual experience. You can be a deeply dedicated to transform your perception of time in the world, and use techniques such as meditation and fasting, you can go and live in una caverna per un anno ed essere un mistico, se vuoi.
